All types of engineers require strong analytical and math skills, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, self-confidence, collaboration, and attention to detail.

The kind of engineering you should study depends on your interests. Ask yourself what you enjoy most: Computers and technology? Construction and infrastructure? Mechanisms and machinery? Electronics and energy? Human health and safety?

Keep in mind: Engineers of every kind are needed in every industry — so you could work as an electrical engineer in the medical field, a mechanical engineer in furniture design, or construction engineer who restores churches.

At Mary, you don’t need to know what type of engineering to pursue when you arrive. All first-year engineering students take the same courses, giving you time to explore while progressing toward your degree.

With the exception of introductory-level courses, your engineering classes will be capped at 20 to 25 students — and upper-level courses may have far fewer students, so you will have your professor’s full attention and support.

Our school was built in 2020 with design input from more than 35 engineering firms. As an undergraduate, you will have full access to this new facility, including our state-of-the art machine shop, design center, design fundamentals lab, and dedicated lab spaces for each program. 

Yes — that is one of the big advantages of the Hamm School of Engineering. You will begin doing hands-on work and projects early in your studies. Our focus is undergraduate education, and our classes are taught in laboratory settings, so you learn both fundamental theory and practical application.

Ideally, you will have more than one! You are strongly encouraged to pursue internships each summer or part-time work during the fall or spring semesters. We have relationships with more than 50 companies in area, and out-of-state opportunities are available too. Your faculty will support you every step of the way.

Yes, you can earn an engineering degree while pursuing athletics, studying abroad, or earning a second degree or minor. You may want to consider making use of our summer semester or extending your studies for a semester or two. We recommend you meet early on with your academic advisor to create an individualized plan of study
