ALEX SCHERR, ’22, ’24
Physical Education Teacher, Linton Public School

Alex Scherr initially studied radiologic technology at Mary but switched to education during his freshman year. He earned a bachelor’s in physical education with minors in coaching and health education in fall 2022 and has taught and coached in Linton, ND, ever since. Alex joined Linton’s high school principal in the 2024 RSLI cohort, hoping to become a principal or athletic director someday.

“There’s not a day that I go out in the community and don’t see a student — at the grocery store, restaurant, golf course, or church on Sundays. If something is going on with me, parents reach out — and you grow together with the kids because you don’t just see them from 8 AM to 3 PM.

“Obviously, the hardest part of earning your master’s degree is working fulltime while you do it. For me, it was hardest during basketball seasons — you get home late at night from practices or games and still have to get your assignments done. “After the two-week institute on campus, I wished the whole thing could have been in person! We missed each other during the online months. I made 15 good friends — and the professionalism was outstanding. If I’ve got a question, I know they’re going to have an answer. It makes you feel humble, but also optimistic that you should not feel limited in any way teaching at a rural school because people are doing great things in their classes with the resources that they have.”
