Dennis Gowen

Current Position: Director of Bands and High Brass and Professor in Music, University of Mary, Bismarck, ND.

Dennis became Director of Bands and Brass at the University of Mary in the fall of 1987. A native of Maine, he holds conducting, performance and teaching degrees from Western Michigan University and the University of Southern Maine. His primary teaching areas include conducting, applied trumpet and horn, and brass ensembles, in addition to conducting the Concert Band and other large and chamber ensembles. Dennis’s brass students have competed successfully in state and regional MTNA collegiate competitions on trombone, trumpet, and horn over the past two decades, and his conducting students have gone on to receive significant artistic recognition in their postgraduate studies and teaching, conducting, and performing careers. A former student recently received the Award of Distinction for Outstanding Contributions to Band in Manitoba, and in the same year, was the recipient of the National Award for Outstanding Band Director in Canada, given to one wind conductor in Canada each year. 

Overseas conducting opportunities for Dennis include tour concerts throughout Italy and in Austria, including a brass performance at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. Guest conducting and solo performance engagements have kept Dennis active professionally throughout the Upper Midwest and North Central regions as well as in Canada and Maine. He has served as conductor for the College Band Directors National Association’s 10-state North Central Intercollegiate Band, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Honor Band Festival, among others. He also enjoys conducting engagements with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra and the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra. He served as Interim Artistic Director and Conductor for the BMSO during their 2007-‘08 season. Gowen is Past State Chair of CBDNA, and has been an Executive Board member and Past President of the North Dakota National Band Association. He implemented, and served as Band Music Reviewer for the North Dakota Music Educators Journal for fifteen years.

As a performer Dennis has worked with various ensembles and orchestras in Canada and the U.S., He serves as principal trumpet with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony and the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra. He has also been a featured soloist with these and other orchestras and wind ensembles in the North Central region. He was recently nominated by students and selected three times as a member of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
