October 17, 2009 Lomax Sets School Rushing Record in Win Over Wolves
In a game that featured four lead changes and two ties, the Marauders dominated the fourth quarter. U-Mary ran 159 yards on 22 carries and passing for 14 more, totaling 163 yards to 32 for the Wolves in the final stanza. The Marauders also held the ball for 11:26 of the 15 minutes. Despite racking up 403 yards of offense to 265 yards for Northern State, U-Mary had to survive four turnovers, all in the first half. Only one turnover, on a bad punt snap to set the Wolves up at the home 15 yard line, resulted in points for Northern State. Three of the turnovers were fumbles, one was an interception. Entering the game, U-Mary had lost just three fumbles all season. Down 10-3 at the half, good fortune shined down on the Marauders early in the third quarter. Joey Bollinger threw a pass into double coverage and the ball appeared to be intercepted by Northern State. Instead the ball tumbled into Terry Newsome's hands and he sprinted the final 20 yards to complete a 50-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 10-10. Thomas Parrot would follow with a 40-yard field goal for Northern State. The Marauders answered with a 33-yard field goal by Rett Thibodeaux to even the game. Parrot then converted from 29 yards out as the third quarter ended for a 16-13 NSU lead. The Lomax show then followed. Starting at the U-Mary 30 yard line, Lomax gained 61 yards on a 9-play 70-yard drive, finishing with a burst from 12 yards out. With 11 minutes left in the game, the Marauders gained their first lead since hitting a field goal for the first points of the game in the opening quarter. In the final quarter, Lomax ran for 146 yards on 16 carries. He now moves into third place on the Marauders all-time rushing leader board, totaling 2,088 yards. The junior now has four straight 100-yard games and five total for the season. In his career he has cracked the century mark ten times. The previous single-game rushing record was 242 yards by Jim Barrett against Huron University in 1997. Defensively, Xavaier Cleveland and Marcus Broome each had 2.5 tackles for loss. Phillip Thomas had a game-high nine stops (eight solo). Montrel Richardson led NSU with 80 yards rushing. He also had five catches for 38 yards. The Marauders remain in third place in the Northern Sun with the win. U-Mary is 5-3 overall, 5-2 in the NSIC and 3-1 in the NSIC north. Next week the Marauders play at St. Cloud State. Northern State slips to 1-7 overall, 1-7 in the NSIC and 1-3 in the North. #marauders# View game stats |
