NJCAA All-American Michael Ulmer to Play for Marauders

Bismarck, ND - Two-time junior college All-American and Bismarck, ND, native Michael Ulmer has committed to play basketball and continue his education at the University of Mary, announced Marauders head men's basketball coach Randall Herbst. The 6-foot-4 forward will be a junior this season and has two years of college eligibility.

A first team NJCAA All-American as a sophomore after earning third team All-American honors as a freshman, Ulmer led Bismarck State College to consecutive trips to the national tournament, including an eighth place finish in 2008-09.

The Region XIII most valuable player and a first team All-Mon-Dak conference selection, Ulmer led the Mystics in scoring this past season with 22.6 points per game. He averaged 7.0 rebounds per game and shot 51 per cent from the floor and 84.2 per cent at the free throw line as BSC finished 2009-10 with a mark of 22-13. Ulmer capped his career with an invitation to compete in the NJCAA all-star game.

As a freshman, Ulmer averaged 18.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game and the Mystics finished the season 23-14. He earned All-Mon-Dak second team honors on his way to third team All-American recognition.

A graduate of Bismarck High School, Ulmer helped the Demons to the 2008 Class A boys basketball state championship as a senior. He was named to the Lions All-Star game and earned All-West Region honors after averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds per game in his final season.

The son of Linda and Keith Ulmer, Michael will pursue a degree in business education with a minor in coaching at U-Mary.

"In Michael, you're talking about a local athlete who put up very good numbers and was part of going to the national tournament in back to back seasons," said Herbst. "Mike has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder and isn't afraid to mix it up with anyone. He can score the basketball and really shoot it from three and could be a very tough matchup for opponents."

"Coach Herbst turned the program around in one season and is running it well," said Ulmer. "Other schools didn't give me the same feelings that I had here. I always go with my gut, and that was U-Mary. Staying at home to play in front of the home crowd is something everyone enjoys. I have everything I need here in Bismarck and hopefully I can help out the Marauders as much as I think I can."

"Although we would love to have Michael putting on the Mystics uniform again next season, we are very excited to watch him play his next two seasons for the University of Mary," said Bismarck State head coach Jason Harris. "They are not only getting a very good basketball player but also a very good young man. Michael is a tough matchup for any defense with the way he can shoot the ball from the outside to go with his ability to post up. He has such good footwork. If Michael doesn't score he usually ends up at the free throw line where he shoots right at 85 per cent, making him a huge asset for any offense."

Joining Ulmer in the Marauders 2010 recruiting class are incoming freshmen Shaun Condon of Clara City, MN, Jalen Jaspers of Minneapolis, MN, and Michael Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN, all three of whom committed during the early signing period in November 2009, Alex Dorr of Norwalk, IA, a sophomore transferring from Iowa State University, and Damon Smith of Milwaukee, WI, a junior forward transferring from Ellsworth Community College.

In Herbst's first season directing the Marauders last season, U-Mary won eight more games than the previous year, jumped eight slots in the Northern Sun standings, and was included in every NCAA Division II Central Region rankings released during the regular season. After a 7-20 overall record in 2008-09, including a 5-15 mark and 13th place finish in the NSIC, the Marauders went 15-13 overall in 2009-10 and finished fifth in the Northern Sun at 11-9. It was the first winning season for U-Mary since joining NCAA Division II and the NSIC in 2006-07, the first winning season overall since 2004-05, and first winning conference campaign since 2002-03.
