Haag, Rust Sign National Letters of Intent to Play Women's Basketball for Marauders

Bismarck, ND - University of Mary women's basketball coach Fred Fridley today announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to continue their education at U-Mary and compete for the Marauders beginning in the 2010-11 season.

Both of the student-athletes committing to U-Mary on the first day of the early signing period are high school seniors, one from Wisconsin and one from Kansas. Submitting National Letters of Intent to the Marauders today were Kaitlyn Haag of Hudson, WI, and Janelle Rust of Elbing, KS.

"I'm very excited about Kaitlyn and Jannelle joining our team. Not only are we getting two great players, we are also getting two great people who fit our program. It's important that our recruits not only fit our style of play but the personality of the team, too. Both Kaitlyn and Janelle are a good fit with our Marauders basketball program and what we are trying to accomplish here at U-Mary."

U-MARY WOMEN'S basketball early signing commitments

Kaitlyn Haag, Post, 6-foot-1, Hudson, WI (Hudson High School)

A starter on her high school varsity team since she was a freshman, Kaitlyn Haag is already a three-time letter winner and was named her team's most valuable player as a junior. She also received second-team all-conference honors and all-district special mention recognition. Haag averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals a game last season. As a sophomore, she earned an all-conference honorable mention citation.

Kaitlyn is the daughter of Tammy Bartlett and Brian Haag and intends to pursue a degree in early childhood education at the University of Mary.

"Kaitlyn is very athletic for a 6-foot-1 post," commented Marauders head coach Fred Fridley. "She has all the tools to be a wonderful player in our system. Kaitlyn has multiple block moves, the ability to take it to the basket, and very good range as a shooter. The other great thing Kaitlyn does is her ability to rebound the basketball out of her area. She has a knack for finding the basketball. Her ability to run the floor also makes her a wonderful fit to our program. Kaitlyn was highly recruited and we are extremely happy to have her at U-Mary."

Janelle Rust, Guard/Wing, 5-foot-10, Elbing, KS (Berean Academy)

In three years of high school basketball, Janelle Rust has helped Berean Academy compile a record of 66-8 and a state championship as a sophomore. Rust averaged 17.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as a junior last season, earning first team all- league, first team all-region and honorable mention honors while landing on two all-tournament teams. Her sophomore year, Rust was a second-team all-league performer and was named to the all-tournament team. As a freshman, her team compiled a 23-1 record, went 25-1 with a state championship as a sophomore, and finished 18-6 her junior season. Rust also competes in volleyball and track.

A member of the bronze honor roll at her high school, Janelle is the daughter of Brenda and Paul Rust and is undecided on an academic program at U-Mary.

"Janelle is an extremely gifted athlete and fits U-Mary basketball perfectly," stated Marauders head coach Fred Fridley. "She is long, athletic and has the ability to be a three-dimensional scorer. She has great range, a very good pull-up jumper game and can finish in traffic. The other great thing about Janelle is her ability to handle the basketball in the open floor and her court vision. She comes from a well coached school at Berean Academy and we feel great she chose U-Mary."
