Big Second Half by Yellowjackets Stings Marauders
     The University of Mary struck first but a second half onslaught by Montana State University Billings drove the homestanding Yellowjackets to a 4-1 win over the Marauders on the final day of the Eighth Annual MSUB Cup Presented by the Best Western Clock Tower Inn. MSUB tallied three times in a nine minute span late in the game to run away with the victory.

     On a rain-soaked Labor Day matinee, Upper Iowa University scored the lone goal of the day in a 1-0 win over the University of Mary. It was the only shot on frame the Marauders allowed the Peacocks in the match.

Stier Strikes First but Rangers Stone Marauders Late   (with photo)
     University of Mary forward Chris Stier opened the scoring early and narrowly missed knotting the score late in a 2-1 Marauders men's soccer loss to Regis University. Taylor Diem scored both the Rangers goals in the first half and the Regis defense kept the game scoreless in the second to record the win over U-Mary.

Marauders Blown Slightly Off Course by Red Storm
     University of Mary women's soccer suffered its first defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Dixie State College in a neutral site game in the MSU Billings Cup. The Red Storm qualified for the NCAA tournament last season and is predicted to repeat as champions of the Pacific West conference.

     The University of Mary defeated Saint Joseph's College behind a blistering 17 kills by Lauren Wells and the Marauders earned a split on day two of the Quincy University Tournament. After opening with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 26-24, 25-12) win over SJC, U-Mary dropped a 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-22) decision to Clarion University.

     After holding off the Metro State College attack for over 107 minutes, Derek Luptak and the University of Mary defense was finally pierced by Scott Grode of the Roadrunners, who scored the game winning goal with 2:41 left in the second overtime for a 1-0 MSC win over the Marauders.

     Amanda Hennessy recorded two double-doubles on opening day to lead the University of Mary to a split of two five-set games at the Quincy University tournament. The Marauders rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the host school before losing in five to Alderson Broaddus.

MSUB Cup the Labor Day Destination for Women's Soccer    (with pdf)
     After opening the regular season at home with a win last weekend, the University of Mary women's soccer team takes its first road trip of 2010 when the Marauders compete in the eighth annual MSU Billings Cup Presented by Best Western Clock Tower Inn over Labor Day weekend. The Marauders will first play the Dixie State College Red Storm, a 2009 NCAA tournament participant, on Saturday, September 4, at 5 PM mountain time. After a day off, U-Mary then faces host Montana State University Billings on Monday, September 6, at 5 PM mountain time to close out the tournament. All games will be played at Yellowjacket Field.

     Willie Wenschlag made several big plays in the University of Mary 2010 football opener and Jess Curl scored the game-winning goal to open the U-Mary women's soccer season, earning the pair Marauders Student-Athletes of the Week honors for the week ending August 29.

Heavy Labor Day Workload as Marauders Host Three Games in Four Days   (with photo pdf)
     The 2010 University of Mary men's soccer team starts the season fast and furious with three games in four days as the Marauders host fellow NCAA Division II programs Metro State College and Regis University of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and fellow independent Upper Iowa University in the Marauders Invite. On Friday, September 3, at Hughes Field, the Marauders face the Roadrunners of Metro State at 8 PM. The Marauders-Roadrunners match is preceded by Upper Iowa and Regis facing off at 6 PM. On Sunday, September 5, U-Mary tangles with the Regis Rangers at the Community Bowl starting at 11 AM. Playing at the same time is Upper Iowa and Metro State on Bavendick Field. The weekend wraps up when the Marauders and the Peacocks of Upper Iowa battle on Monday, September 3 at the Community Bowl. Game time is 11 AM.

     A new era of University of Mary volleyball is set to start this week under the direction of new Marauders head coach Steve Novacek when the 2010 season begins with four games at the Quincy University Tournament in Quincy, IL, on September 3-4. After facing the host school to open the tournament, the Marauders conclude day one on Friday against Alderson Broaddus College. On September 4, U-Mary will tangle with St. Joseph's College and Clarion University.

     The University of Mary Traveling Tailgate debuts this Friday, September 3, when the New Salem-Almont/Glen Ullin Holsteins host the Bowman County Bulldogs. A featured game for KFYR-TV, the tailgating begins at 5:30 PM and Marauders head coach Myron Schulz and U-Mary student-athlete Jarad Wolf, a 2009 All-State performer for the Holsteins, will be in attendance.

For the third straight season and the fourth year out of the last five, the Marauders open the season against perennial national power Chadron State College. Marauders Women Second, Men Eighth in 2010 NSIC Preseason Cross Country Coaches Poll
     Behind the return of five of the Marauders top seven runners, conference coaches project the University of Mary women's cross country team to finish second in the 2010 Northern Sun Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll released today. U-Mary garnered two first place votes and 88 points to finish tied with Minnesota-Duluth for second in the rankings. Augustana claimed first in the women's poll with seven first place votes and 97 points.

Ali Collins Set to Join Marauders
     One of North Dakota's most highly decorated prep basketball players is returning home. Ali Collins, the 2009 North Dakota Miss Basketball and a three-time state champion, will transfer to the University of Mary for the 2010-11 season, announced Marauders head women's basketball coach Fred Fridley. A native of Mandan, ND, Collins will be a sophomore with three years of athletic eligibility remaining.

     Two time junior college all-league pitcher Emily Sinclair has committed to play softball and continue her education at the University of Mary, announced Marauders head coach Gerice Olson. Sinclair is a native of Chehalis, WA, and played at Lower Columbia College the past two seasons. She will have two years of eligibility with the Marauders.

Marauders Women's Basketball Gains Commitment from Mia Gilreath
     University of Mary women's basketball coach Fred Fridley has added a third player to the 2010 recruiting class, today announcing the addition of Omaha, NE, native Mia Gilreath. Transferring from Southwest Baptist University, Gilreath will have two years of eligibility at U-Mary and will be immediately eligible to compete for the Marauders while she pursues her academic interests.

     Andy Leer of the University of Mary was drafted by the Minnesota Twins today in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. A shortstop, the Williston, ND, native becomes the first Marauders baseball player ever selected in the draft. He is also believed to be the first U-Mary student-athlete selected in a major professional draft in any sport.

     Two-time junior college All-American and Bismarck, ND, native Michael Ulmer has committed to play basketball and continue his education at the University of Mary, announced Marauders head men's basketball coach Randall Herbst.      Nicketa Coombs earned individual and team All-American honors for the University of Mary at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, capping another outstanding season for the Marauders women's track and field team. After helping U-Mary's 4x100 meter relay team to a seventh place finish, the redshirt freshman wrapped up the season with an eighth place finish in the 400 meter dash to seal All-American honors.

     The University of Mary's Nicketa Coombs jetted past the competition to land a spot in the women's 400 meter dash finals and propelled the Marauders 4x100 meter relay team to a school record and the relay finals on the opening day of the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Her efforts secured Coombs All-American status in both events with one more individual competition remaining for the redshirt freshman from Kingston, Jamaica.

     For the second time this week, Dre Brunskill of the University of Mary earned regional recognition when she was named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Central Region team. The senior was chosen to the 13-player team in the utility player-non-pitcher slot. The squad is selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Marauders Win NSIC Women's Outdoor Title For Third Time in Four Seasons   (with photo pdf)
     The University of Mary women's track and field team earned the 2010 Northern Sun women's outdoor track championship in true team fashion - the Marauders didn't earn a single individual title. In fact, the only first place finish for U-Mary demonstrated the teamwork needed to win a third NSIC title in four years - a 4x100 meter relay victory by .03 seconds.

     With the Northern Sun outdoor track and field championships approaching this weekend, the University of Mary men's track and field program makes its season in the 2010 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Central Region Team Index. The U-Mary men are rated 10th in the fifth ranking of the season, which was released this week.

     University of Mary senior Dre Brunskill ripped six hits, including two home runs and two doubles, in her final regular season double header for the Marauders. The U-Mary first baseman's output helped the Marauders to a split at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Golden Eagles rallied for a 6-4 win in the opener before the Marauders outlasted UMC 14-12 in game two.

     The University of Mary softball team jumped up one slot to ninth in the latest 2010 NCAA Division II Central Region rankings. The third straight week in the regional polls for the Marauders, U-Mary entered the rankings in ninth before slipping to tenth last week.

     With two outs in the top of the ninth of the opening game, a pitching duel suddenly became a slugfest. The two teams combined to score 10 runs in the ninth, all with two outs. Andy Leer would provide the University of Mary with a 9-8 win over Bemidji State University when the senior shortstop singled home the game-winning run in the tenth inning.

     The University of Mary women's outdoor track and field team is ranked third in the Central Region in the 2010 outdoor United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Regional Team Index released today. This is the third straight week the Marauders have held down the third slot.

     The University of Mary's Brianna Perry claimed third place in the 2010 Northern Sun Multi-Events championship held the past two days at Northern State University.      One individual victory and three relay team wins at the 2010 Sioux City Relays earned Nicketa Coombs Collegiate Women Outstanding Athlete honors for the meet. Paced by Coombs, the University of Mary women's outdoor track and field team won 11 events on Friday and Saturday and set two school records.

     The University of Mary wrestling coaching staff is excited to host the annual Marauders Wrestling Camp.      The Marauders outhit seventh-ranked Winona State University but the University of Mary softball team was unable to outscore the Warriors. U-Mary was swept in its Northern Sun opener, falling 8-4 and 5-3 in a doubleheader moved to Aberdeen, SD, from Bismarck due to wet field conditions. The Marauders compiled 19 hits on the day to 18 for Winona State.

     Wet, snowy weather in central North Dakota will send the University of Mary softball team south for the weekend.      A seventh inning meltdown in the opener and a home team hitting display in the nightcap lifted the University of Mary softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota State University Moorhead in the Marauders 2010 home opener. Brenda Langston earned two wins on the day as U-Mary scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 3-2 and the sweep was delivered when the Marauders clubbed 13 hits to beat the Dragons in game two 11-4.

     The top-scoring duo in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Anthony Moody and Eric Erdmann keyed a University of Mary men's basketball turnaround and earned conference post-season awards for their efforts. The leading scorer in NSIC games, Moody was named the Northern Sun Newcomer of the Year and was also named to the All-Northern Sun first team. Erdmann earned second team honors for the second time in his Marauders career.

     Dusty Vliem won all four of his matches, including two by fall, and the University of Mary picked up its first two dual wins of the season at the University of Central Missouri. The Marauders defeated Newman University 33-12 and 22-15 over Chadron State College. U-Mary dropped two to nationally ranked teams, 27-9 to #9 University of Nebraska-Kearney and 24-15 to #20 Central Missouri.

     The University of Mary men defeated Concordia University 75-68 behind Eric Erdmann. Erdmann became the 14th Marauders player to eclipse 1,000 points in his career. The junior forward from Fargo, ND, scored a game-high 24 points to lead U-Mary.

     The NBC North Dakota Sports Network is televising the University of Mary men's and women's home basketball games against St. Cloud State University on Friday, January 22. The Northern Sun contests will be broadcast throughout central and western North Dakota and into eastern Montana and northwest South Dakota. The women's game kicks off the broadcast at 6 PM with the men's game to follow from the McDowell Activity Center.

     For the third time in his career, Dusty Vliem was named the Northern Sun Wrestler of the Week, honored today following a dominant individual performance in the Marauders dual with 11th-ranked Upper Iowa University.      While it is probably just coincidence versus a positive omen for the season, unseasonably warm weather rolled through Bismarck this past week just as the 2010 University of Mary softball team started official practice. Though not yet warm enough to practice outside, the above average temperatures and melting snow along with the popping of mitts and the ping of bats makes spring seem just that much closer.

     A tremendous display of shooting and a dominating rebounding effort carried Bemidji State University to an 81-59 victory over the visiting University of Mary in Northern Sun men's basketball action. Despite suffering two losses on the road over the weekend, the two setbacks cost U-Mary only one slot in the NSIC standings as the Marauders slipped from fourth to fifth.

     A scintillating second half for homestanding Bemidji State University carried the Beavers to a 71-61 over the University of Mary in Northern Sun women's basketball. The Marauders led 30-25 at intermission but the Beavers captured the second half 46-31 to take the game and snap their six-game losing streak to U-Mary.

U-Mary Women's Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Ethics Award
     Honorable play on the pitch demonstrating fair play and model behavior earned the University of Mary women's soccer team the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Silver Team Ethics Award. Only 68 men's and women's collegiate soccer teams from all divisions received this recognition. The Marauders were cited for just three yellow and no red cards during the 2009 season.

     For the first time, the University of Mary men's and women's basketball teams will take part in the Northern Sun Holiday HoopsFest in Sioux Falls, SD, over Thanksgiving weekend. U-Mary will face fellow NSIC schools St. Cloud State on Saturday, November 28, and Concordia University - St. Paul on Sunday, November 29. The games are considered non-conference contests but are regional games.

Defense Propels Marauders Past Cougars 73-40
     A tremendous defensive effort and a big second half propelled the University of Mary women's basketball team to its first win of the season as the Marauders defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 73-40. The Marauders limited the Cougars to just 27 per cent shooting from the field on their own court, including a 1-for-16 effort beyond the arc, and forced 30 turnovers.

     Unranked prior to the season while counting on four freshman and no seniors, the University of Mary women's cross country team finished 18th in the nation at the NCAA Division II national championships. Marauders Crack National Women's Cross Country Poll   (with pdf)
     A fantastic finish at the regional championships propelled the University of Mary women's cross country team into the national rankings for the first time since joining the NCAA. The Marauders are 19th in latest NCAA Division II cross country national rankings by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Marauders earned a trip to the NCAA Division II championships after placing fourth in the NCAA Division II Central Region Championships last Saturday in Wayne, NE. Ranked seventh in the region prior to the event, U-Mary improved three places from its pre-regional rating. Competing in the nation's toughest region, the Marauders were able to capture one of six available slots for the national championships.

Power Outage Stifles Marauders
     Tied 13-13 in the opening set, the University of Mary was playing even with Wayne State College. Then the power went out. After a one hour electrical outage at Rice Auditorium on WSC's campus, the lights came back on but the Marauders offense didn't in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-14) loss to the Wildcats. The victory was the 13th straight for WSC.

Eamin Entwisle paced the Marauders men to a second place finish after placing third.

     Allison Christian registered nine kills to lead the University of Mary to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-22) victory over Kentucky Wesleyan for the second straight day and third place in the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational. The Marauders generated 36 kills to 23 for the Panthers.

Nikola Tallies Twice as Marauders Topple Rangers

     Kriss McCleary will become the fifth McCleary brother to compete for the Marauders this fall following his transfer to the University of Mary.      The University of Mary has promoted Kevin Forde to the post of Assistant Athletic Director for Operations, announced Marauders athletic director Roger Thomas. U-Mary's compliance officer and assistant men's basketball coach the past four years, Forde was instrumental in the college's transition to NCAA Division II athletics. He has 12 years experience working for athletic departments in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Streak Snapped at Northern Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships
     In the Marauders first two years as a member of the Northern Sun, the University of Mary women's outdoor track and field team claimed the conference championship, winning titles in 2007 and 2008. This year, it was another new - yet familiar - squad that claimed the women's title. The University of Minnesota Duluth, a one-time member of the Northern Sun that just returned this season, dethroned the Marauders to claim the championship as U-Mary finished sixth.

     The University of Mary's late-season playoff drive received a huge boost today. The Marauders swept a pair of games at Upper Iowa University, the team the ninth-place U-Mary softball team hopes to catch for the final spot in the Northern Sun softball tournament that begins Friday. The Marauders scored three times in the seventh inning to win the nightcap 5-3. U-Mary won the opener 4-1.

Marathon Then Rout as Marauders Dump Dragons
     Twice University of Mary freshman Desiree Smith was the final batter of the game, and twice the Marauders won on Saturday. A bases-loaded walk to Smith in the opening game of the doubleheader scored the winning run in a 9-8 11 inning marathon U-Mary victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead. In the nightcap, Smith blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early through the mercy rule as the Marauders routed the Dragons 8-0.

     Poor weather conditions is forcing a trip west to become a trip east for the University of Mary track and field team. Bakkum Earns All-NSIC Honors After Fourth Place Finish in Final Tournament
     Matt Bakkum of the University of Mary earned 2008-09 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men's Golf honors after he finished tied for fourth in the final conference tournament of the year. Bakkum finished eighth overall in the cumulative standings based on three tournaments.

Sixth Inning Sets Marauders Back as Mavericks Sweep Marauders
     For the second straight day, the sixth inning proved to be the downfall of the University of Mary baseball team. Minnesota State University scored the winning run in the sixth inning of both games today to sweep the four game Northern Sun series between the two teams. The Mavericks won game one 8-7 after scoring the winning run in the sixth and rallied to win the second game 10-5 by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning.

     Matt Bakkum of the University of Mary is tied for second after day one of the Northern Sun men's golf championships at the Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, MN. Bakkum shot a 71 and is one stroke off the tournament lead.

     A six-run outburst in Minnesota State University's final at bat of the day prevented the University of Mary from gaining a split of a Northern Sun baseball doubleheader. The Mavericks defeated the Marauders 10-1 in the first game and 11-6 in the second.

     Stifled offensively by the new leaders in the Northern Sun softball standings, the University of Mary was swept at Wayne State College. The Wildcats shut out the Marauders 8-0 and 2-0 to move into first place in the NSIC by one win.

     There may not be any Northern Sun teams located in Montana, but that is where the University of Mary baseball team expects to open its 2009 conference season.      The University of Mary softball team put runs on the board but couldn't slow the Southwest Minnesota State University offense as the Mustangs swept the Marauders 9-4 and 8-5 in two Northern Sun contests.      University of Mary twins Megan and Danelle Lunn combined for nine hits in a doubleheader split with the nation's 20th-ranked Minnesota State University Mavericks.      Tough losses were the rule of the day for the University of Mary softball team. The Marauders dropped two one-run games on day four of their trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, FL. Grapplers Prepared for NCAA Regionals
     One year ago, the University of Mary made its debut at an NCAA Division II wrestling regional. One wrestler advanced to the national tournament. Jesse Laber, now a student coach for the Marauders, finished fifth nationally in 2008 in the heavyweight division. This season, the Marauders hold hopes of advancing anywhere from two to even five wrestlers to the national meet.

     The University of Mary men's and women's basketball games starting times for the Marauders regular season finale at Minnesota State University on February 28 have changed. Watson Grand Slam Can't Overcome Late Bulldogs Rally
     Nate Watson hit a grand slam for the University of Mary but the University of Minnesota Duluth scored the last six runs of the game as the Bulldogs defeated the Marauders 7-6 in extra innings at the Metrodome.

Shorthanded Marauders Fall Short
     Down two starters before the game tipped off, the University of Mary women's basketball team seemed unfazed for the first 19 minutes of the game. But Winona State University owned the next 21 minutes and outscored U-Mary by 19 points in the second half on the way to a 77-55 Warriors Northern Sun victory over the Marauders.

     Twice this season the University of Mary men's basketball team knocked off highly regarded teams at home. The Marauders wanted a trifecta but fell just short when 19th-ranked and defending national champion Winona State University pulled out a late 70-64 win over U-Mary.

Golden Bears Stifle Marauders in Baseball Opener
     Nate Watson pitched a solid opening game to the season and freshman Tyler Steffan drove home two runs in the nightcap but the Marauders were unable to pick up a win on their first day of the season. Concordia University - St. Paul swept the Marauders 4-0 and 8-3 in a non-conference double-header at the Metrodome between two Northern Sun foes.

     University of Mary Athletic Director Roger Thomas announced today that Eric Snyder is the new head coach of Marauders volleyball. Snyder was head coach the last two seasons at Stonehill College in Easton, MA, where he revived the Skyhawks volleyball program.

     With the game tied at sixty and just over seven minutes remaining in regulation, the University of Mary appeared to have an opportunity to pick up a victory at home over the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Opportunity didn't come knocking on the Marauders door. Instead, what looked to be a memorable contest for the Marauders suddenly became a nightmare U-Mary couldn't wake up from.      The University of Mary men's basketball team was a part of history Saturday night, but not the way the team would have preferred. Northern State University defeated the Marauders 82-62 to earn Wolves head coach Don Meyer coaching win 903, surpassing Bob Knight as the winningest men's basketball coach in NCAA history.
