Just the sixth head coach in the history of University of Mary men's basketball, Randall Herbst took over the Marauders program on May 7, 2009. With 16 years coaching at the collegiate level, Herbst is well-prepared to lead U-Mary.

An assistant coach at the University of Nebraska Omaha the past two seasons, Herbst became familiar with North Dakota during a six-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota. Included in his collegiate coaching experiences is a two-year run as a head coach at Waldorf Junior College.

"We're excited to bring such a talented young coach into our Marauders family," said U-Mary Athletic Director Roger Thomas. "Randall is a tenacious, hard working coach who will bring an exciting brand of basketball to the McDowell Activity Center. He has consistently been associated with winning programs and I believe he can bring success to the Marauders program."

"This is an outstanding opportunity for me to coach at a school that has had a history of basketball and athletic success," said Herbst. "The Marauders compete in one of the strongest NCAA Division II basketball conference in the nation and I look forward to the challenge.

"We're going to play hard and we'll be disciplined. I think fans will enjoy and appreciate being a part of Marauders basketball. I can't wait to get started."

In two seasons at Nebraska Omaha (2007-09) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Herbst helped lead the Mavericks to a 42-18 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II regional tournament. UNO set a school record for wins during his first season as the Mavericks rolled up a 25-7 mark and advanced to the second round of the national tournament in 2007-08. The squad also won the North Central Conference tournament while first in the country in free throw percentage (79.7 per cent) and 10th in scoring average (84.8 points per game). The Mavericks went 17-11 this past season and ranked ninth nationally in three point shooting percentage (41.0 per cent).

Prior to arriving at UNO, Herbst spent one season at Florida Southern (2006-07) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

Herbst's initial exposure to the state came as an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota (2000-2006), where he worked for Rich Glas, UND's all-time coaching wins leader. The recruiting coordinator for all six seasons and the associate head coach for two years in 2004-06, Herbst coached three NCC Players of the Year and three All-Americans at UND, including Jerome Beasley, the 2003 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. Beasley was drafted by the Miami Heat in the second round of the NBA draft.

The first collegiate head coaching experience for Herbst came at Waldorf Junior College. In two seasons at Waldorf (1998-2000), his squads led the nation in scoring defense both seasons. He also won 19 games his first year, second most in team history. Marauders men's basketball coaches Randall Herbst (left) and Jevin Budde meet Hall of Famer Magic Johnson.

At NICC, the team won the 1995 NJCAA Division II championship and had three winning seasons, including two 20-win years. The Lincoln Memorial team recorded 19 wins, the most NCAA Division II wins in the history of the school, and ranked fifth in the nation defensively.

A 1993 graduate of Winona State University after starting his college career at Waldorf Junior College, Herbst owns a Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from Minnesota State University.
