The University of Mary's production of the musical "Damn Yankees" Nov. 14-17 will be the final play for longtime director Bev Huschka, who is retiring this year.
"Damn Yankees," featuring a cast and crew of 40-plus and a pit orchestra of more than 20 musicians, is the classic musical about the love of a man for his baseball team.
"Damn Yankees" opened on Broadway in 1955, ran for more than 1,000 performances and spawned a film version and numerous stage revivals, winning numerous Tony and Drama Desk awards and making standards of songs such as "You Gotta Have Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants."
"Damn Yankees" tells the story of Joe, a long-suffering Washington Senators fan, who makes a deal with the devil – he will trade his soul if the Senators* can beat the New York Yankees for the pennant.
Originally choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse, the U-Mary cast includes freshmen Thomas Mortenson of Jamestown as Joe, Sarah Serdar, West St. Paul, Minn., as Lola, Chandler Hertz of Jamestown, Margaret Statz, South St. Paul, Minn., Ann Balster of Minneapolis, and seniors Clayton Perala, Bismarck, and Theresa Mack, Rugby (for full cast, see below). Dennis Gowen conducts, with choral director Dr. Tom Porter, voice coach Katherine Henjum, and choreographer Hollis Mackintosh Heid.
Performances start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 14-16, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Belle Mehus Auditorium in Bismarck. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. For tickets, call 701-223-4260, or visit 505 Seventh St. in Bismarck from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. * The Senators became the Minnesota Twins in 1961!
