BISMARCK - It's lighter a little longer; the snow is moister; the leaves are . . . well, not out yet, but they're tryin' … It must be time again for the University of Mary's annual Spring Band Concert! The public is invited to join U-Mary music students in ushering in the season with a free performance on Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m., in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel, in the Benedictine Center.
This year's program will showcase several exciting works from a variety of world-renowned composers. Works will include a wind version of the Largo from Dvořák's "New World Symphony," American Overture by Joseph Willcox Jenkins, and the recently popular Machu Picchu from the pen of Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa. "Machu Picchu is as exciting to rehearse as it is to perform," says Professor Dennis Gowen, director of bands at the University of Mary and conductor of the University Concert Band. "Yagisawa's compositional style is immediately infectious to the ensemble as well as the audience!"
Other works to be performed will include an excerpt from The Year 1812 (also known as "The 1812 Overture") by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a selection that's sure to take full advantage of the acoustical reverb in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel in the Benedictine Center. The concert will begin with a tribute to the 100th anniversary of one of the most famous brass fanfares of all time - Fanfare pour précéder "La Péri" by Paul Dukas. Also included in the performance will be Ralph Hultgren's untamed Whirr, Whirr, Whirr.
