BISMARCK-University of Mary musicians will take to the road later this month, with the 2012 Fall Music Tour, featuring stops in Fargo, ND, and four Minnesota cities. The U-Mary Concert Band, Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present free public concerts on Monday, Oct. 29, at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Saint Cloud, MN; Tuesday, Oct. 30, at O'Shaughnessy Auditorium in St. Paul, MN; and Thursday, Nov. 1 at Sts. Anne and Joachim Church in Fargo, ND - all beginning at 7:30 PM. Tour participants also will perform and work with students at schools including Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, MN; Monticello High School, St. Agnes School and Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, MN; Richfield Middle School and High School and Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, MN; and Kennedy High School in Fergus Falls, MN.
"The tour allows us to perform for the general public in communities outside of our immediate area and hopefully to connect with our alumni in St. Cloud, Minneapolis/
St. Paul and Fargo," says U-Mary Music Department Chair and Choir Director Dr. Tom Porter. "It also gives us an opportunity to reach out elsewhere in the region to high schools where interest and excitement about the University of Mary is building and to demonstrate the high quality of our student ensembles and music faculty. "
In addition to the performances, during the school visits, U-Mary faculty will work with student musicians in private lessons, chamber groups, sectionals and large ensembles. Faculty participating in the tour will include Porter, Dennis Gowen, Katherine Henjum, Lucas Bernier, and Dr. Scott Sandberg. They will be accompanied by Kyia Zubke, who will serve as tour photographer and housing coordinator.
Under Gowen's direction, the Concert Band will perform a host of classic and newer compositions for the wind band. Among the featured works will be "Gandalf" (Mvmt. 1 from "Lord of the Rings") by Johan de Meij, and "Children's March: Over the Hills and Far Away" by Australian composer Percy Aldridge Grainger.
"Grainger's music is loved the world over," says Gowen, who is beginning his second quarter-century as director of bands at the university this fall. "Grainger had such a passion for wanting musicians to, above everything else, enjoy the music they perform. And this passion for enjoyment transcends the notes and lodges firmly in the psyche of the audience! 'Dance of the Jesters' by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is another established audience favorite," Gowen notes. "It's one of my favorite works to conclude any band concert - the adrenaline is pumping overtime by the end of the piece!"
The four-movement gypsy-inspired composition "Puszta" by Jan van der Roost is also slated for performance, as are the new John Mackey work "Sheltering Sky" and the classic "Rhosymedre" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Rounding out the program will be the Henry Mancini favorite "Pie in the Face Polka," from the Blake Edwards movie "The Great Race," starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood. The piece, featuring the clarinet section, accompanies a raucous, slapstick pie-throwing scene in the movie. "Mancini's music is just pure entertainment, and this one is no exception," says Gowen.
The Concert Choir, directed by Porter, will perform a variety of sacred and secular choral works, including "Nunc dimittis" by Palestrina for double choir, "Alleluia" by Randall Thompson, and "Lux aeterna." Written by Porter, "Lux aeterna" was commissioned by Saint Mary's Central High School Choir, Vicky Boechler, '88, in memory of William Schmidt, longtime band director at St. Mary's. It uses the traditional Latin text, and pieces of the original chant are woven into the newly composed melody. It is published by Heritage Music Press.
Other choral pieces include a set of Celtic tunes, including the ever-popular "Danny Boy," a Latvian round dance, and an experimental piece from 1967, "Rondes," which explores vocal sound textures.
Vocal Jazz also will perform at some of the venues. This nine-member ensemble features a cappella pieces including renditions of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," Patsy Cline's "She's Got You," and Rimsky Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee."
