New Works, Old Favorites Kick-Off 2012-2013 Performance Season at the University of Mary 2012 Fall Band Concert

BISMARCK-It's October and time to mark your calendar to attend the University of Mary's annual Fall Band Concert. This year's performance, Sunday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m., in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel, will include a host of classic and newer compositions for the wind band. Among the featured works in this first performance of the 2012-2013 season will be "Gandalf" (Mvmt. 1 from "Lord of the Rings") by Johan de Meij, and "Children's March: Over the Hills and Far Away" by Australian composer Percy Aldridge Grainger.

"Grainger's music is loved the world over," says Dennis Gowen, conductor, who begins his second quarter-century as director of bands at the university this fall. "Grainger had such a passion for wanting musicians to, above everything else, enjoy the music they perform. And this passion for enjoyment transcends the notes and lodges firmly in the psyche of the audience!"

"Dance of the Jesters" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is another audience favorite over the years. "It's one of my favorite works to conclude any band concert - the adrenaline is pumping overtime by the end of the piece!"

The four-movement gypsy-inspired composition "Puszta" by Jan van der Roost is also slated for performance, as are the new John Mackey work "Sheltering Sky" and the classic "Rhosymedre" by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Rounding out the performance will be the Henry Mancini favorite, "Pie in the Face Polka," from the Blake Edwards movie "The Great Race" starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood. The piece, featuring the clarinet section, accompanies a raucous, slapstick pie-throwing scene during in the movie. "Mancini's music is just pure entertainment, and this one is no exception," says Gowen.

Come join the University of Mary Concert Band for this invigorating performance. This concert is free and open to the public.
