Unique Degree Program in Correctional Management to Debut in January
The University of Mary's new Bachelor of Science in correctional management degree program--geared toward meeting the emergent demand for correctional managers at all levels and furthering career opportunities for graduates--is set to launch spring semester 2011.
The first program in this field in the United States to have been developed in collaboration with federal and state agencies, the Bachelor of Science in correctional management program at America's Leadership University incorporates input from the National Institute of Corrections and the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as well as from practicing correctional management professionals.
Its comprehensive curriculum will provide preparation for a range of entry and mid-level management positions, as well as career advancement in this growing field.
Offered through the Gary Tharaldson School of Business, the correctional management program provides a practical theoretical perspective and dynamic, hands-on application of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Delivered primarily online in the University of Mary's proven flexible, accelerated format, it is designed with the lifestyles and experience of adult learners in mind. The high-quality faculty include business, community, and leaders from across the spectrum of local, state and federal corrections.
"The correctional management major is a timely addition to the university's offerings," stated Karel Sovak, Gary Tharaldson School of Business assistant professor and director of the new program. "According to the National Institute of Corrections, the correctional workforce is experiencing an attrition of senior-level managers, leaving a gap in management and leadership at all levels of correctional agencies. Graduates of this program will be prepared to be successful in a range of management positions in local, state or federal correctional programs and facilities and have a solid ethical foundation for contributing to policies, practices and operations. This is an excellent program of study for those who may have a management degree and have an interest in corrections, as well as those in corrections who want more management skills."
The correctional management program is designed to meet the unique needs of adult learners, recognizing their experience and enabling them to meet their career goals by offering a quality University of Mary education in a flexible format. The curriculum is primarily delivered through online courses, plus an eight-day residency. As with all U-Mary adult learning programs, correctional management students benefit from:
* An accelerated format that makes it possible to earn a degree in as few as 15 months
* Outstanding faculty equipped to provide a "real world," as well as academic perspective
* A "cohort" approach where they learn with a supportive peer group
* Credit for applicable prior learning through education, work or life experience
