Bismarck, ND-Ensembles from the University of Mary Music Department will take to the road in February and March with free public concerts in Bismarck and Williston, ND, and four cities in Montana. The U-Mary Spring 2010 Music Tour, the first such tour in over a decade, begins on Thursday, Feb. 25, with 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. performances at Williston High School. Area students among some 70 performing include Shawna Metzger, Chelsey Grad, and Caitlin Nicks of Williston; Craig Goettle of Donnybrook; Marci Johnson of Kenmare; and Lauren Meiers of Ross, ND; and Kaitlyn Hardy of Fairview, MT,.

The 1 p.m. concert will feature the U-Mary Concert Band and Concert Choir. Following the concert, University of Mary faculty Dennis Gowen, Katherine Henjum, Dr. Michelle Kiec, Dr. David Lambert, and Dr. Tom Porter will conduct ensembles, work with high school students and ensembles, and will be available to meet with students and audience members about programs and opportunities at U-Mary. At 5:30 p.m., U-Mary Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz will join with Williston High School instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles to perform a variety of repertoire in schools and churches.

The University of Mary Concert Band, under the direction of Dennis Gowen, will perform a wide array of musical selections, including Leroy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday" (featuring the trumpet section), the evocative "Ghost Train" by Eric Whitacre, Rossini's "La Boutique Fantastque" (orchestrated by Respighi, arranged by Mahaffey), and "Glory and Triumph" from the original band work titled "Symphonie funèbre et triomphale" by Hector Berlioz, as well as selections from the classic band work "La Fiesta Mexicana" by H. Owen Reed. "We are blessed to enjoy a strong tradition with our band program here at U-Mary, and have developed a wonderful following in our local region," says Gowen. "I am most pleased to be able to share the talents of our fine collegiate musicians with a much broader audience during our 2010 spring tour!"

The Concert Choir will perform repertoire from chant to contemporary, including works by Palestrina, Rachmaninoff, Hovland, and Kverno, and folksong arrangements by Mack Wilberg and U-Mary conductor and Director of Choral Studies Porter. "Our students are excited for the opportunity to perform for students and community members in Williston," says Porter. "The schools and churches throughout our tour have been very welcoming, and we are thrilled to share our music with the students and audiences at each site."

The 5:30 p.m. program will feature selections from the recent University of Mary Jazz Festival, including compositions by U-Mary director Lambert and U-Mary student Weston Schick. In addition, Vocal Jazz will perform a cappella selections including "Ticket to Ride," "Hide and Seek," "I Run to You," and the jazz standard, "They Say It's Wonderful."

The University of Mary Music Tour also will include stops in Great Falls, Helena, Billings and Miles City, MT. It will conclude with performances at the University of Mary in Bismarck. On Sunday, March 28, there will be a band concert at 3 p.m., in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel. The choir will perform on April 11 at 3 p.m., also in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel.
