The Music Department strives to develop a true community of learners where a challenging curriculum is integrated with professional training so that all the graduates are prepared to excel in their chosen specializations.

Graduates of this department:

• Perform instrumentally and/or vocally with artistic competence
• Conduct musical groups with attention to artistic concerns
• Know the field of music study; can use its technical vocabulary and common approaches; can describe current issues and significant artistic works
• Can assess their own performance for purposes of continued development
• Can work effectively with others and demonstrate respect for them
• Can describe the values of this Benedictine institution and reflect on them in their work
• See themselves as contributing members of larger civic, cultural, and professional communities

Students may work toward a Bachelor of Arts (Music or Sacred Music), Bachelor of Science (Music Education), or Bachelor of Music (Music Performance).

Students transferring from another institution may be required to take music theory, ear training, and piano placement exams.

Special requirement for the Music Education major: Class and/or applied study in both voice and an instrument is required for a minimum of 4 semesters. Applied study in either Voice/Diction or one instrument must continue for 3 additional semesters. Notes: 1 - Ensemble and leadership credits not count toward overload status. 2 - Placement in applied or class piano is determined through a keyboard placement exam. 3 - Placement in applied or class voice is determined through a voal placement exam. 4 - Transfer students should take EDU 202: Intro to Teaching for Transfers, not EDU 201. 5 - PSY 207 Lifespan Development may be substituted, but does not meet Middle School Endorsement. 6 - Either Jazz Pedagogy or Piano Pedagogy is required for the Music Education major. 7 - Capstone course for this major. 8 - Please select one of these courses for this degree. 9 - Music electives (no more than 8 credits may be in applied music and/or ensembles). Each performing area may have specific requirements.
