Issue No. 70 - Thursday, June 16, 2011
Over a dozen U-Mary alum and two former university employees came together with family, friends and neighbors to help Bruce Schumacher, '88 & '07, and Kristie (Huber) Schumacher, '07 & '08, sandbag their Bismarck home. The couple celebrated their second anniversary on June 14 by "paying it forward," filling sandbags for others. (Photo submitted by Bruce Schumacher)
Mary Community Puts Values Into Action Fighting Flood
The University of Mary's core values continue to come to the forefront in countless ways as efforts on the part of the university and its community to assist in flood-fighting and relief efforts go on. In recent weeks, the university has provided housing in its residence halls for 650-plus members of the ND Army National Guard and the ND Air National Guard, as well as for displaced members of the U-Mary community and their families. In addition, the University of Mary's McDowell Activity Center was designated as the emergency medical evacuation site for the City of Bismarck if called upon by the ND Department of Health. And university personnel have been encouraged to assist with sandbagging and other flood protection efforts by being allowed time off to help. From Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery helping to serve dinner to the National Guard on campus to the hundreds of alum, students, faculty and staff who are giving so generously of themselves, U-Mary's response to the unprecedented challenges facing North Dakota and Bismarck-Mandan exemplifies the university's mission of service and leadership, and the exceptional commitment to community that distinguishes the University of Mary and its family. May God bless and sustain us.
