Illuminating the World, Sharpening the Mind, Elevating the Senses in service of Truth with Moral Courage
"One of the great tasks that a school of arts and sciences at a Catholic University serves is the unity and intercommunication of faith and reason. Faith is knowledge born of a love for God and neighbor which then adheres to God's communication with us. Reason is the gift that God has given to the human race to understand and know this universe through exploration and discovery. Both lead to knowledge of this universe, though through different paths and in a complementary fashion. Faith can tell us things at times that reason could never know; it requires trust in God and in the channels that God has chosen to reveal. Reason makes use of imagination, questions, inquiry, discovery, articulation, discussion, and other activities to reach its aim, which is an understanding of things, people, actions, and God. Pope John Paul II described faith and reason as the two wings that take us to Truth. The School of Arts and Sciences has the mission and the opportunity to discover and explore the connection between these two wings and the destiny to which they lift us."
