A Message From the Dean

Welcome to the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences!

I cannot think of a better environment in which to earn your health care degree.

At the founding of Mary College in 1959, health sciences were there from the beginning. And at every point in our history, health care education has led the way. Along your journey, we hope that you will find a special friend and confidante in Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, under whose patronage our school operates.

Our legacy is tremendously important to us. We want our graduates to be the very best in their fields. And we also want something more. We want our graduates to be exemplars of moral courage and defenders of the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person.

Moral courage means:

  • Asking this question thoughtfully: “Just because we can do something in medical science, should we do it?”
  • Ensuring that every person, created in the image of God, has access to necessary treatments and therapies – especially the poor, the marginalized, and the underserved.
  • Acknowledging that health care professionals and their patients both have rights of conscience and so approaching ethical dilemmas with keen perception, personal fortitude, and gracious understanding.

Our community of students and faculty engage in learning through work in classrooms, clinics, labs, and research – preparing servant leaders who will transform health care for everyone at all stages of life. In all we do, our Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine values guide us as an institution of higher learning.

We feel honored and grateful that you seek to further your education with us. We trust that your experience here will be an enriching and life-giving adventure of learning. We are praying and cheering for you along the way.

God bless you!

— Dr. Mary Dockter, Dean
