Internet Access

The University of Mary does not require students to purchase their own computers at this time. The university does provide access to computers and the Internet through the residence hall computer labs as well as the Welder Library and the Harold J. Miller Labs. For some students it may be more convenient to have their own computer. If you do decide to bring your own computer, the University of Mary provides high-speed Internet access for every student in the residence halls. At this time the university does not provide 802.11x wireless Internet in the residence halls. The price for high-speed Internet access is included in the technology fees.

If you wish to connect your computer to the Internet, you need to purchase approximately ten (10) feet of CAT5 network cable and have an installed and configured network card in your personal computer. Any correctly configured and working network card will work on our network. The ResNet technicians cannot assist students with installing or configuring network cards. Click recommended requirements for more information on the requirements.

For those students living off campus, there are several local and national Internet service providers available at the expense of the student.

Wireless Internet Access

Where: Chicks Place; Welder Library, main-floor commons and lower-level commons; new coffee shop; South Cafeteria. (There may be signal access in the classrooms and other areas such as the North Cafeteria, but it will not be officially supported.)

Supported Standards:  802.11B or 802.11G wireless only, no 802.11A or Bluetooth.

Connecting:
The name of the university's supported wireless system is "HotSpot." It will be on the list of wireless networks your computer sees. There will likely be other wireless networks. An example may be “Radio-12-SE,” but these are not U-Mary-supported networks. Once connected, launch a Web browser; if it seems to not load anything, try typing in another Web site, such as www.google.com, and it should redirect you to the HotSpot registration page.

You will need a valid U-Mary e-mail account and password to authenticate. Enter your e-mail account (e.g., imstudent1) and password. Then read the Acceptable Network Use Policy and click Accept at the bottom of the page. The registration will take a moment to authenticate you, and then you should receive a “Registration Successful” screen. If you get an error page, try your login and password again. If you are still getting errors, please call Dale at (701) 355-8076 for assistance.

If you successfully registered, you can restart your computer and use the Internet as normal from this point forward. Registration is only required one time and covers all of the “HotSpot” wireless locations.

If you are experiencing difficulties with your Internet connection, please contact Dale Haman at 355-8076, or e-mail: dhaman@umary.edu.
