Join the team of peer educators by applying to be a Health PRO member!
The purpose of the University of Mary/Mid Dakota Clinic Health PRO is to educate U-Mary students about a broad range of wellness and personal choice issues based upon Christian, Catholic and Benedictine values through innovative and creative presentations. The team will provide information to University of Mary students on a broad range of wellness topics including health, mental health, safety and personal lifestyles choices. In contrast to the values emphasized by popular and secular culture, the Health PRO Team will provide information within the context of the values of the University of Mary to enable students to make healthy and safe decisions, based on spiritual values in regard to the many choices that are most typical during the college experience.
The team is jointly supervised by the Director of the Student Health Clinic and consists of student members. Membership on Health PRO requires: 1) a commitment to model wellness and personal decision-making based upon spiritual values; 2) a time commitment that will average approximately six hours a week; 3) a commitment to attend all regularly scheduled team meetings; 4) a commitment to collaborate with other team members to research and prepare innovative presentations such as skits, games and demonstrations for use by the team; 5) an ability to make a commitment to return to campus early in fall for Health PRO orientation and also to prepare for and make presentations during new student orientation.
In the selection process, preference will be given to students who evidence some or all of the following characteristics: a) leadership skills and potential; b) excellent communication skills including confidence in making presentations and/or performing in front of an audience as part of a skit and c) students who are able to demonstrate knowledge about wellness integrated with spiritual values.
Team members will be compensated at the rate of $6.oo/hour. Students selected for the team who qualify for the work-study program will be assigned to Health PRO as their work-study assignment and paid from work-study funds. Students who do not qualify for work-study program will be paid out of institutional employment. In both cases, membership on Health PRO will be taken into account in relation to financial aid awards.
The success of Health PRO in accomplishing goals will depend on its ability to appeal to the college student population. Most programming will use a peer-to-peer model and for it to be successful, team members must be perceived by their peers as competent and credible. Presentations must successfully invite audience participation, be fun and impart valuable content. Programs may include any of the following: information displays, skits, videos, speakers, and/or peer-led discussions.
Health PRO will serve as a core group and will strive to invite participation of other student groups in offering programming. Examples of other groups that might become involved include: classes (i.e. a community health nursing class, a social work class, an education class); Emerging Leaders Academy; Campus Ministry Team; Resident Assistant Council; Student Government, and Student Organization.
