The staff at Career Services can assist students with the age-old question "What are you going to major in?" or "What are you going to be when you grow up?" Exploration, according to Donald Super Career Development Theory, is the predominant task on which students should be focusing during their college years. Career Services offers many resources and services for students who are engaged in the career planning and decision-making process. These resources focus on self exploration and personal assessment, major exploration, occupational research, salary surveys, employer research, market and labor analysis, and graduate/professional school research.
Career Counseling Students are encouraged to set up a time to meet with the director to discuss career and occupational goals, interest, skills, potential barriers, and parental expectations. All career counseling sessions are both private and confidential.
Career Testing The Career Services Office offers several tests to help students learn more about themselves. This information can then be related to majors and the world of work. With the approval of the director, students can take one or more of the following:
- Strong Interest Inventory
- Self Directed Search
- Myers Briggs Type Indicator
- Major-Minor Finder
Computer-Assisted Career Guidance System A Web-based, self-directed, comprehensive guidance system called Bridges assists students in identifying their career and educational planning needs/goals; assesses interests, work values, and skills; and provides information about majors and specific occupations.

Information on College Majors Oftentimes students want to know what they can do with a certain major in terms of jobs or employment after graduation. Several Web sites address this: What can I do with a major in? What can I do with this major?
Four-Year Career Roadmap Career Services has developed a roadmap or guide to provide students with a framework for what they need to be doing each year of college to help them be successful upon graduation. The Career Roadmap can be downloaded here.
Career Resource Library Career Services also has an extensive career resource library to offer students. Students are encouraged to stop in to check out books on various career paths, majors, job search, resume/cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, graduate programs, and life after college. Want to know what you are worth? Career Services resources include salary surveys from ND and the United States. Students are encouraged to stop by to pick up their complimentary copies of Job Choices, Career Outlook, or Job Search for Educators, depending on their major.
