St. Paul, MN – For the second straight season, Meghan Ward of the University of Mary was named to the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Conference softball team. The senior second baseman from Escondido, CA, is one of the top players in the conference at bat, in the field, and on the base paths.
Shortstop Maegan Lunn, a junior from Murrieta, CA, earned honorable mention honors. It was the second straight season Lunn was named to the honorable mention squad.
The Pre-Season NSIC Co-Player of the Year, Ward is among the league leaders in several categories. Entering the Northern Sun conference tournament, Ward is first in hits (66) and doubles (17), second in stolen bases (17), third in total bases (86), fourth in runs scored (37), and 13th in batting average (.346). Defensively, she leads all NSIC players in assists (123) and fielding double plays (12).
Ward also has 29 RBIs from her leadoff spot in the batting order, a .450 slugging percentage and gets on base at a .378 clip. She also is 17-of-19 on stolen base attempts and has struck out only four times all season.
Lunn hit .287 this season, driving in 26 runs and scoring 32. She tallied nine doubles and three home runs with a .392 slugging percentage and a .349 on-base percentage. Second in the NSIC in defensive double plays with 12, Lunn had 104 assists and 84 put puts.
The Marauders finished fourth in the Northern Sun with a record of 11-7. Overall, U-Mary is 28-28 as the Marauders prepare for the NSIC conference tournament on May 3-4.
