St. Paul, MN – The honors are beginning to pile up for the University of Mary Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field team. After leading the Marauders to the 2008 Northern Sun Women’s Championship, Kacie Sweep was named the NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and Mike Thorson earned Women’s Coach of the Year honors. Additionally, thirty Marauders combined to earn 58 All-Northern Sun or conference honorable mention recognition.
A junior from Bismarck, ND, Sweep claimed three titles at the NSIC meet. Individually, she won the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash before teaming up to run the second leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay team for U-Mary. Sweep will compete in the 200 meter and the 4x100 relay at the NCAA Division II championships.
For the second straight year, Thorson was named the NSIC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. In two years competing in the NSIC, the Marauders have won the conference title both times and have won conference championships 13 times in 14 years at U-Mary.
The Northern Sun awards all-conference honors to the top two place winners in each event and the top relay team from the conference meet. Honorable mention honors are awarded to the third-place performers and the second-place relay teams.
