Bismarck, ND – Minnesota State University swept the University of Mary in a softball doubleheader using the power game. The Dragons slugged five home runs to one for the Marauders in a pair of non-conference meetings between the Northern Sun foes. MSUM won game one 6-0 and game two 12-3.
A scoreless game through four innings, the Dragons scored first in game one on a Lacey Bunkleman 2-run home run in the fifth. Katlin Stein added a two-run homer in the seventh to seal the game. Julie Vacura kept U-Mary off the scoreboard in throwing a complete game shutout.
The Marauders out-hit the Dragons 8-5 in the 6-0 loss but couldn’t string any hits together. Leslie Benavidez, Danelle Lunn and Sara Naglosky each went 2-for-3 for U-Mary.
Casey Preston jumpstarted MSUM to the 12-3 win in game two, hitting her first of two home runs in the game to lead off the second inning. She added a three-run shot in the fourth. Mackenzie West also had a two-run homer. Winning pitcher Kari Sagehorn allowed one hit in three innings while collecting three of her own and driving in four runs, including three on one single.
The Marauders were limited to four hits in the second game. Maegan Lunn put U-Mary on the board when she slugged a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Lunn’s second homer of the season followed a walk to her sister Danelle. The Marauders added another run in the fifth. Brenda Langston doubled and scored after Meghan Ward singled and the Dragons catcher dropped a throw at the plate.
U-Mary is now 14-18 this season. MSUM is 7-5.
The Marauders are next in action when U-Mary hosts Jamestown College in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m.
