University of Mary student named DEX state president, MOB advisor honored as Advisor of the Year
Fargo, ND -- The third class of University of Mary Marauders On Business (MOB) were winners all at the 2008 DEX (Delta Epsilon Chi) North Dakota Career Development Conference in Fargo, Feb. 10-11. All 12 U-Mary DEX participants qualified for the 2008 International Career Development Conference to be held in Atlanta, GA, April 12-15, 2008, by taking one of the top two places in each category of the annual state competition. Each year, DEX, an organization designed to prepare students for successful business careers in marketing and management, hosts conferences in 42 states, two Canadian provinces, and Puerto Rico, involving more than 14,000 students from 230 colleges and universities.
At the same event, Lauren Meiers, daughter of John and Jean Meiers of Ross, ND, and a sophomore at America's Leadership University, was elected president of the North Dakota State Officer Team for 2008-2009. Bringing further honors to U-Mary and its Tharaldson School of Business, assistant professor and MOB advisor, Karel Sovak, was honored as Advisor of the Year.
In this, its third year in the state competition, MOB competed against more than 60 students from ND colleges and universities in 19 different individual and team event categories. U-Mary's MOB squad has shown impressive growth as a DEX competitor. Last year, eight students participated in the state competition, with seven qualifying for the international conference, and the year before, two out of four students taking part at the state level qualified to advance.
"It is awesome seeing not only the growth we are experiencing with our chapter, but the success stories as well," says Sovak.
"Every year, new students step forward and take on leadership roles or advance themselves in a professional way. They are inspiring to others and inspire me to continue to help provide these opportunities. I am very proud of each one of them and their accomplishments."
