Events reflect theme of "Reaching Out, Leading Forward."
Bismarck, ND--This morning, Monday, Nov. 17, the University of Mary, America's Leadership University, began a year of events celebrating its first 50 years with bells, prayers and a proclamation. The university started a yearlong countdown to its 50th anniversary with a Jubilee! for the U-Mary community and friends. A standing-room only audience took part in a candlelight ceremony incorporating music, prayer, and the ringing of bells, and witnessed a proclamation of celebration.
The morning gathering was followed by a reception and the Jubilee will be capped by an evening of food, fun and fireworks.
"This great day will mark the start of a milestone year in the history of the University of Mary," said President Sister Thomas Welder. "With a year of events and activities reflecting and carrying forward our mission of service, the University of Mary's 50th Anniversary celebrates our heritage and looks to a bright future.
"The University of Mary has made great strides in the 50 years since the dream of a determined and courageous group of Benedictine Sisters to serve the people of the prairie with a four-year Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine college first became a reality. It is with gratitude that we invite students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to our yearlong celebration of the vision of America's Leadership University, "Reaching Outward, Leading Forward."
The university's Nov. 17 "Fun in the 50th" evening campus activities begin at 4:45 p.m. in Leach Field House, with a carnival-like event featuring a variety of food and entertainment for the U-Mary community, alumni, and friends. At 6:45 p.m., there will be a fireworks display on Hegeholz Field, followed by a dance with live music from The Front Fenders from 7 p.m. -11 p.m.
