1. What will I get out of the Emerging Leaders Academy?
Proven leadership skills, networking opportunities with the region's leaders and your future employers, experience leading meaningful, real-world projects … the list is endless!! We are here to help you reach your potential and make a difference in tomorrow’s world.
2. How much time will it take?
During your freshman and sophomore years, you will meet once a week. Team projects and other activities may take extra time outside of the classroom. During your junior year and first semester of your senior year, you will meet on an as-needed basis to develop your specialized leadership project, learn from leaders, and polish your professional skills.
3. But what if I am in extra-curricular activities?
College students are busy people. Keeping on top of your classes, working, and participating in extra-curricular activities like music or athletics demands good time-management skills. About one-third of the academy students participate in athletics and others find their spot in drama or music. We are here to help you be the best you can be and will work with you to make your participation in the academy possible. Just call, and we will develop a plan to help you through those busy times.
4. How much does it cost?
Nothing!! There is no credit fee attached to the Emerging Leaders Academy classes. There would be a cost if you decide to participate in any of our global or domestic travel opportunities.
5. Do I receive credit for the Emerging Leaders program?
The answer is “yes.” You will earn one semester credit for every semester of active participation in the Emerging Leaders Academy. After your first four semesters (freshman and sophomore years), you will also receive a “General Leadership Certification” on your college transcript. If you complete all seven semesters of the program, you will receive the coveted status of “Certified Schafer Leader” and receive special honors at graduation.
6. Who is Harold Schafer?
The inspiration for the Harold Schafer Leadership Center and its successful Emerging Leaders Academy comes directly from the life and career of Harold Schafer. Schafer, a true servant-leader and noted North Dakota entrepreneur, believed in hard work, faith in self and God, ambition, and tenacity. He was a mentor to many and continues to be a role model for students in the Emerging Leaders Academy. 7. How long has the Emerging Leaders Academy been in existence?
The Emerging Leaders Academy began in September of 1998 with a group of 27 business students. Since that time, it has grown to an enrollment of approximately 550 students. The academy now includes health care, education, and human service areas in addition to the original track in business.
8. What are your graduates doing?
Emerging Leaders Academy graduates are successful leaders in their new communities, professions, and graduate schools. Human Services class of 2005 graduate Caitlin Coghlan, is with the staff of United States Senator Kent Conrad, ND. Ninety-four percent of the 2006 seniors in the Health Care Emerging Leaders class have received admission to their professional school or found employment in government and research organizations. Several business graduates are already working on their MBA degrees. The class of 2005 education students boasted a 100 percent placement rate and taught in Wyoming, North Dakota, California, Florida, and Minnesota.
