An award-winning coach entering her eighth year as head coach of the University of Mary volleyball program, Heidi Sunderland continues to create history with the Marauders. In 2006, Sunderland directed U-Mary in its first season in NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). This year, the Marauders have their first chance at post-season play at the NCAA D2 level.

In 2004, Sunderland led the Marauders to a conferece title and the NAIA playoffs, a team performance that earned her DAC-10 Coach of the Year honors. The signature win of the season was a victory over rival Dickinson State University (DSU) 3-1. It had been nearly eight years (104 games) since DSU had lost a conference match.

A graduate of Dickinson State University (‘96), Sunderland played volleyball for the Blue Hawks from 1992-1995 where she earned All-NDCAC honors three years and All-Great Plains Region honors once. She continued her involvement in volleyball as a graduate assistant at Northern State University and became the head volleyball and softball coach at Mayville State University in 1998. Coach Sunderland then became the University of Mary head coach in March 2000.

Sunderland earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in physical education and a minor in psychology at DSU before obtaining her Master of Science in education teaching and learning with an emphasis in health, physical education and coaching at NSU in 1998.

In addition to her coaching duties, Sunderland is an assistant professor of education and Senior Woman Administrator. She is also the Marauder Volleyball Camp director and instructor. Active in the community, Sunderland is a volunteer with the North Dakota Special Olympics, American Red Cross CPR/First Aid instructor, United Way Day of Caring volunteer,a member of Bismarck Community Church and the former director of the Missouri Valley Junior Olympics.

Jenny Madrid
Graduate Assistant Coach

After a highly successful collegiate and international playing career, Jenny Madrid enters her first season as the University of Mary volleyball graduate assistant coach.

A native of Panama City, Panama, Madrid lettered for two years in volleyball at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. As a freshman in 2001, Madrid led her team to conference and regional titles, earning a national junior college tournament berth for only the third time in the school history.

In 2002, Hill College was the undefeated conference champion the regional runner-up. Madrid led the nation in blocks in 2001 and earned all-conference and all-region honors and was selected to four all-tournament teams. As a sophomore in 2002, she ranked second nationally in blocks and third in hitting efficiency. Madrid was a member of the all-academic team in 2002 and named the most valuable player for the Collin County Classic 2001 and 2002.

In her only season at Texas Woman’s University in 2003, Madrid led the team in kills and blocks and was second on the team in service aces. She was named to the 2003 Lone Star Conference All-Tournament Team and the All-Conference first team while earning LSC North Division Player of the Week honors once.

Madrid transferred to Southwest Baptist University in 2004 where she earned MIAA All-Conference honorable mention honors.

Madrid broke into collegiate coaching as the SBU student assistant volleyball coach for the 2005-2006. In 2005, Madrid earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and International Business with and a minor Spanish in 2005.

A member of the Panamanian National Volleyball program, Madrid played for the Panamanian National Junior and Senior teams and was named team’s Most Valuable Player for both 1998 and 1999. She coached the Panamanian junior team for the National Tournament in 2003, where her team finished as the undefeated champions of the tournament.

Madrid is working in her Master’s in Education-College Teaching at U-Mary.
