Bismarck, ND - The
University of Mary, despite playing shorthanded, gave the nation’s
fifth-ranked team several jabs, but it was the University of North
Dakota that landed one knockout punch.
Trailing at intermission by four, U-Mary came out of the locker room
on fire with a 17-9 run to start the second half. A three-point play by
Nicci Landdeck gave the Marauders a 52-48 lead with 14:29 remaining in
the game.
The next seven minutes belonged to UND. North Dakota went on a 17-0
run and built its largest lead of the game at 65-52. By the time the
Marauders would score again on a Corrie Villegas basket with 7:33
remaining, the game proved to be out of reach.
U-Mary would cut the deficit to seven points with under two minutes
remaining, and to six with 41 seconds left, but the Marauders couldn’t
get into a one-possession game.
Villegas and Landdeck led the Marauders with 17 points each.
Landdeck hit 6-of-9 from the field and knocked down all five of her
free throw attempts. She also had a game-high 10 boards and led U-Mary
with three assists. Villegas was 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 on
treys. She added six rebounds.
Ashley Fridley and Kayla Rogers also reached double-digits for the
Marauders, each contributing 13 points. Fridley, 5-of-8 from the field,
scored 10 of her points in the first half and also grabbed six rebounds
and made two steals. Rogers hit three treys and hit all four free
throws.
Due to injuries and sickness, the Marauders played with seven players. UND, meanwhile, used ten.
