Bismarck, ND—The University of Mary dropped its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual meet of the season to Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs defeated the Marauders 33-16.

Each team won four matches, but SMSU made its wins count more. Three of the Mustangs wins came on pins while the Marauders scored just one pin. SMSU also earned 12 points from two open U-Mary weight classes.

U-Mary, down 12 points early due to openings at 125 and 141, needed a victory at 133 and received it with a 5-3 win by freshman Aric Tarr (Columbia Falls, MT) over SMSU’s Michel Barrie. SMSU rebounded when Luke Geise pinned freshman Tyler Krumm (Bismarck, ND) 3:40 into the 149 match, putting the Mustangs up 18-3.

Junior Devin Nagel (Corvallis, MT) worked to get U-Mary back into the match, defeating Chris Fast 14-2. However, SMSU would rally from behind in each of the next two matches to win both by pin fall, with Chris Fast defeating junior Brady Nagel (Corvallis, MN) at 3:44 in the 165 match and Tyler Johnson beating freshman Charles Cheeks (Houston, TX) at 2:48 in the 174 contest. That put SMSU up 30-7.

The Marauders did rally to win the next two matches. Freshman Kurt Wiedrich (Williston, ND) defeated Cody Chamblin 8-3 at 184. In the 197 pound match, junior Jesse Laber (Napoleon, ND), the 2005 NAIA Champion and a two-time NAIA All-America, pinned SMSU’s C.D. Johnson 4:15 into the match.

SMSU’s David Marshall won the heavyweight battle 7-1 over U-Mary freshman Joe Thompson (Bloomington, MN).

The Marauders next wrestle this weekend when U-Mary travels to Fayette, IA, to face Upper Iowa University in NSIC action on Saturday, Jan. 20, at p.m..

184 pounds: Kurt Wiedrich (U-Mary) defeats Cody Chamblin (SMSU), 8-3. 10-30.

197 pounds: Jesse Laber (U-Mary) wins by pin fall at 4:15 over C. D. Johnson (SMSU). 16-30.

Heavyweight: David Marshall (SMSU) defeated Joe Thompson (U-Mary), 7-1. 16-33
