Bismarck, ND - The University of Mary opened its 2007 women’s tennis home schedule with an 8-1 setback to Minnesota State University Moorhead. After winning one of three doubles matches, the Marauders lost all six singles matches.
This was a replay of a matchup from earlier in the week. The Dragons defeated the Marauders 9-0 in Moorhead on Sunday.
The #3 U-Mary doubles team of senior Jessica Seifert (Bismarck, ND) and freshman Michelle Bauer (Mandan, ND) defeated MSUM’s Maria Cederberg and Heather Buesing 8-4 for the Marauders lone victory of the day. It was Seifert and Bauer’s second double team win in three attempts this season.
The Dragons took the other two doubles matches. In #1 doubles, the team of Rose Milless and Miranda Quast quashed U-Mary’s Chelsey Stark (Jamestown, ND) and Ashley Bennett 8-3. MSUM’s Ashley Taborsky and Laura Benz defeated Miranda Christen (Williston, ND) and Julie Zaruba (Monticello, MN).
In singles play, MSUM’s Taborsky defeated Stark 6-3, 6-0 in the #1 spot. U-Mary’s Christen fell 6-1, 6-1 to Milless in #2 play. In #3 singles, Ellie Matheson beat the Marauders’ Zaruba 6-3, 6-1.
Bennet fell 7-5, 6-1 in #4 singles to Claudia Irina of MSUM. In the fifth slot, the Dragons’ Benz defeated Seifert 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). In the sixth and final singles slot, Beth Helgeson beat U-Mary’s Bauer 6-2, 6-1.
This contest is considered a non-conference match. The U-Mary – MSUM match last Sunday was the meeting that counted in the NSIC standings.
The Marauders fall to 1-2 on the season. U-Mary is 1-1 in Northern Sun play. The Dragons improve to 7-7 overall. MSUM is 5-1 in NSIC play.
U-Mary has a busy weekend schedule. The Marauders face the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday, March 31, at 4:00 p.m. in Grand Forks, ND. On Sunday, April 1, U-Mary will take on Minnesota-Duluth at 1 p.m. and Winona State at 4 p.m. Both Sunday matches will be in Winona, MN.
