Marauders Drop Match to Dragons on Mat

Bismarck, ND—The University of Mary grapplers dropped its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual match 31-12 to Minnesota State University Moorhead, the nation’s 19th ranked team in NCAA Division II.

The Marauders won the first match of the night decided on the mat and closed with two straight wins, but it wasn’t enough to overcome four straight victories by the Dragons and two more wins by forfeit due to open weights by U-Mary at 125 and 141. Both teams were open at 197.

Marauders freshman Aric Tarr (Columbia Falls, MT) defeated the Dragons’ Troy McFarland 12-4 at 133. Tarr, who was just names the NSIC Wrestler of the Week, had control throughout the match.

After the Marauders dropped their second match by forfeit at 141, the Dragons reeled off four straight wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174, the last two by pin fall.

U-Mary bounced back in the final two matches of the night. Kurt Wiedrich, a freshman from Williston, ND, defeated Matt Nelson 12-11 in a shootout.

Wrestling at heavyweight for the first time this year, junior Jesse Laber (Napoleon, ND) closed out the dual with a dominating performance over MSUM’s Josiah Bush, winning by technical fall in the first period at 2:59. At the time the match was called, Laber led 15-0. Laber was the 2005 NAIA national champion at 197 and a two-time All-America.

The Marauders, who fall to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC in duals, close out their season next week with duals on back-to-back days. U-Mary wrestles at Northern State on February 15 in an NSIC conference match before traveling to St. Cloud State on February 16 in non-conference action. MSUM improves to 13-6 in duals and 2-0 in NSIC action.
