Schedule of Commencement Activities


Baccalaureate Celebration
Main Campus, south of Bismarck on University Drive
Saturday, May 3, 2008, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Eucharistic Liturgy, Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel, Benedictine Center for all graduates and guests. Street attire.

Commencement
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Bismarck Civic Center, 7th Street South and Bowen Avenue
Lineup - 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m 
Processional - 1:50 p.m.
Ceremony - 2 p.m.

Attendance encouraged. E-mail graduation coordinator, lonniep@umary.edu, with any change to planned attendance. Main entrance on Bowen Ave, Door A1, and north entrance Door E42 for the Exhibit Hall on 5th St S on corner of Front Ave, open at 11 a.m. (A tunnel connects the two buildings.)

Guidelines for the Commencement Ceremony 

All Degree Recipients: Name cards, provided by graduation coordinator, found in designated area indicated below. Each graduating student will hand name card to Dr. Diane Fladeland, vice president for Academic Affairs, when crossing stage. To ensure correct pronunciation, print name phonetically on card if it has not already been done. Or e-mail pronunciation to Dr. Fladeland at dflade@umary.edu,  or graduation coordinator, lonniep@umary.edu, no later than one week prior to ceremony,.

Undergraduate Degree Recipients: Name cards in Linden Room, west corridor of arena, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Honor cords available for students with  GPA of 3.50 to 4.00.
 
Doctorate and Master's Degree Recipients:  Name cards in hooding areas as listed below. Note: Name cards used twice--at hooding and ceremony. Family and friends welcome.

    Doctor of Physical Therapy, Exhibit Hall A, north end of building
    Master of Business Administration, Exhibit Hall B, north end of building
    Master of Management, Exhibit Hall B, north end of building
    Master of Education, Birch Room, west corridor of arena

Choose one of the options below.
    A)  Return hood to Linden Room, west corridor, following commencement. 
    B)  Keep hood. $28 charged to student's account.
            Note: Currency/checks/credit cards not handled the
                     day of commencement.
                     
Lineup 
Undergraduate degree recipients: 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. 
Doctorate and master's degree recipients: 1:30 p.m. to 1:45p.m. 
Tassels on right side of mortar board or tam. Faculty available for assistance in outer corridor. Line up in alphabetical order within each degree, starting with highest degree (i.e., D.P.T., M.B.A., B.A., etc). Stay in line to promote accuracy and timeliness.

Processional starts at 1:50 p.m.
Commencement programs placed on graduate's chair in area. Leave personal belongings with family members.

Walk slowly. Maintain three feet of space between graduates. Junior marshals (gray gowns) escort graduates to seating area. Remain standing for Invocation.

Men, please remove caps when the bishop steps forward for the invocation.

Receiving Plaques and Recognition for Degree Completion

Watch row leaders (first person on right end of row), stand, and proceed to platform.

Hand name card to Dr. Diane Fladeland. As name is announced, cross  platform to University of Mary President Sister Thomas Welder, receive plaque with left hand, and shake hands with right hand. Move tassel to left side of mortar board or tam.

Return to seating area. Be seated after the return of entire row.

Recessional
University of Mary President Sister Thomas Welder and honorary guests recess out of arena with students following. Make arrangements to meet family prior to lineup.
