| I joined the faculty of the University of Mary in 2003, following several years of study and teaching at the University of New Mexico and after having taught on the East Coast with the University of Maryland system, having coordinated writing instruction for Virginia Theological Seminary, and having run a professional writing and editing company, Peninsula Editing Network. I am originally from Virginia and have lived most of my adult life in the mid-Atlantic region (primarily in Maryland), in and around Washington, D.C. My areas of professional scholarship include American and British literature of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, literary modernism, the Romantic movement(s), Southern literature, women writers, the novel genre, literary theory, and transformational grammar. Areas in which I have a compelling interest and in which I also continue to read and study include music (I began my college career as a music major), drama (performance and production), history and political science, women’s issues, and human spirituality.
Statement on Servant Leadership
It seems to me that the role of a university professor inherently involves the component of servant leadership that reflects giving of oneself for the benefit of others. Every time we conduct classes, share our knowledge, direct and respond to student work, advise students about coursework and help to define student goals, we are leading by example and by serving the needs of the students whose lives we touch. I see servant leadership as part of the sacred trust with which university professorships are endowed.
