Mission

The University of Mary Department of Exercise Science exists to provide the people of this region with leaders in the areas of fitness and exercise testing, exercise prescription, exercise program development, and fitness instruction, meeting the fitness and exercise needs for people who are apparently healthy, at higher risk, or have known disease. The mission of the department of exercise science is driven by the Rule of St. Benedict and aims to provide the region with services that promote the exercise component of a healthy, holistic lifestyle.

Philosophy

At the University of Mary, exercise science is an undergraduate degree program with a strong liberal arts foundation. University of Mary Exercise Science Program is an applied science, and therefore our program emphasizes a sound foundation in the sciences. The curriculum and outcome goals reflect a philosophy of learning through participation, interaction, and application. We believe that education is a lifelong process in which individuals are constantly growing professionally and personally. It is through these experiences that we come to realize deeper levels of understanding.  Our educational philosophy and mission drive our outcome goals of preparing students to interpret, analyze, be resourceful, and think critically in a world of constant change.

Exercise science students will develop knowledge, skills, and competencies that allow them to address the fitness and exercise needs of people who are apparently healthy, at higher risk, and with known disease. The focus of the exercise science program is clinical in nature, encouraging higher education opportunities, stressing an individual approach to exercise prescription, and promoting exercise for a healthy lifestyle. It is our desire to prepare exercise science students for application of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Exercise Health Fitness Instructor Certification, thus increasing their opportunities in the career market.
