Probationary Period

The probationary period is a time for the student to evaluate his/her desire to have athletic training as a career. Depending on interest, fulfillment of expectation and academic class status, the probationary period will last either one or two semesters. Expectations will be made for the student depending on all previous performances in the athletic training major.

A student may be placed on probation for several reasons, but usually resulting from a lack of completion of educational requirements or training room responsibilities.

At this time the student will have a conference with the program director and athletic training staff members to determine the specific terms of the student's probationary status. This process will be completed so the student has positive input and an active voice regarding the removal of the specific probationary status. All efforts will be made to assist the student, if the student so desires, to remove the probationary status.

A student will be removed from probation once he/she has fulfilled the responsibility for this probationary period. If a student fails to fulfill those responsibilities he/she may enter the termination process.

Termination Policy

If a student consistently does not fulfill written expectations, classroom requirements, training room responsibilities, misses required meetings or violates an athlete's trust, the student will receive notification from the program director that a meeting is needed to discuss the student's performance and specifically any problems which have occurred.

At that time, the student will be allowed to voice his or her opinion regarding the situation to the staff members. The staff members will be available to assist the student in whatever manner possible.

If the situation can be rectified, the student will be given a reasonable amount of time to modify the behavior (probationary period). If the problems remain unresolved and/or unsolvable, the student will be notified of termination from the Athletic Training Program.

Termination will only be used as a last resort after all attempts to correct the situation have been undertaken. In the event of termination, the athletic training staff members will be available to assist the student regarding any future academic pursuits.
