Instructions for Applying to Criminal Justice Major

Complete and submit the attached application to the University of Mary Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Division in order to be considered for admission to the criminal justice major. So that your application may be reviewed without delay, please read this letter and follow instructions carefully.

1. Apply for admission to the division no later than during the second semester of your sophomore year.

If you are a transfer student, apply during the first semester at U-Mary.

2. Write a formal essay to explain in the context of your interests and career goals your reasons for choosing the criminal justice major.

The essay is an example of your professional writing skills, a necessary element in the criminal justice major. The criteria by which the essay will be judged are listed in the instructions. If, in our judgment, your writing sample does not fulfill these criteria, you will receive conditional admission status, and you will be directed to improve your writing skills in the Learning Skills Center. You must complete this remediation by the end of the semester in which you apply, or you must resubmit your entire application.

The criminal justice major prepares you for a career in education. Some students, however, may utilize the major to prepare themselves for graduate school or law school. As you apply for admission to the division, consider personal interests and career goals that have led you to this decision.

The essay should be a minimum of one page (250-300 words) and consist of at least three paragraphs: an introduction in which you present your main idea, a body in which you provide support for the main idea, and a conclusion in which you bring the essay to a close. Use proper grammar, correct spelling, and standard rules of punctuation to construct sentences.

3. Submit the completed application to Dr. Chad Litton, chair of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division.
