Application Into the Division of Nursing Undergraduate Program

Application into the Division of Nursing begins during the fall semester of the sophomore year. Requirements for acceptance into the Nursing Division are:

  • Completed application form
  • Two (2) recommendations
  • A GPA of 2.75 or higher. (GPA is computed from grades for credits earned at the University of Mary and from those transferred to the University of Mary toward the nursing degree.)
  • Grade of C or higher in each of the following courses and official transcript if transferred credits:

  • No nursing or nursing prerequisite course (above-listed courses) may be repeated more than once. The grade received during the student's second attempt will be used in evaluation for admission. The total number of nursing or nursing prerequisite courses which may be repeated is limited to three.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Certification© (two-year) is required of all students. This is to be completed between May and August prior to the start of the junior year so certification will be in effect through the senior year.
  • Clear criminal background check (must be completed between April 15 and May 1, a second one is required prior to senior year).
  • Documentation of health requirements as given below:
    1. An Immunization and Health History Record documenting physical assessment, health history, current immunizations including MMR, Hepatitis B Series and history of varicella must accompany the application to the division. (Please note: Upon agency request, a varicella titer may be required at the student's expense.)
    2. TB testing is required, but will be completed fall semester of the junior year at the university.
    3. Students must meet the Physical and Mental Requirements to Provide Safe Patient Care for Students, Faculty & Preceptors.
  • An interview will be scheduled with members of the Nursing Admissions Committee.

Applicants are considered primarily on the basis of academic achievement as evidenced by cumulative GPA of 2.75 through the spring of the sophomore year course work. Preferential consideration is given to applicants who are currently practicing CNA's, have taken all prerequisite coursework at the University of Mary, and have demonstrated participation in volunteer activities. Entry into the nursing major is competitive and class size is limited.

Students who previously applied to the Nursing Division and were placed on a waiting list or not accepted must submit a new application in order to be considered for admission.
