1. What degree am I earning?
The University of Mary awards only one bachelors degree in nursing, and you are earning the exact same degree as the students in the traditional classroom program. The U-Mary Nursing Degree Completion Program is not an online program, it is Web-enhanced, meaning your course content is delivered in a different format; rather than attending lecture in the classroom, you access your course content from the Internet.
2. Are all the nursing classes on the Internet?
All of the nursing course are in a Web-enhanced format, meaning that the course content is available on the Internet. Some nursing classes also have a required clinical and/or an on-campus component. Clinical experiences most often can be completed in your home community, but a local experience is not guaranteed, and you may need to travel to Bismarck or a neighboring agency.
3. How often do I have to come to campus?
Students are required to come to the Bismarck campus a number of times during the program. New students are expected to attend the one-day Orientation Seminar held each fall. In addition, students will need to attend sessions held on campus during NUR 248.99 Health Assessment, CHE 107.99 Chemistry Lab Day, and a number of times during the last two semesters of the program, as determined by individual instructors. Currently students are asked to attend approximately two to three on-campus sessions each of the last two semesters.
4. Where do I do my clinicals?
Clinical experiences most often can be completed in the student’s home community. Area hospitals and health care agencies serve as clinical sites, with registered nurses functioning as preceptors. If contracts and/or arrangements cannot be made in a home community, clinical experiences will need to be completed in Bismarck.
5. How long does the program take to complete?
Because every student enrolled in the Nursing Degree Completion Program is a transfer student, the amount of time needed to complete the program depends on the number and type of credits transferred to the University of Mary. On average students can often complete the program in two years and three months.
6. What do I do if I have a question or need help with an assignment?
For questions regarding specific classes or course content, please contact the course instructors using the phone numbers and e-mail addresses provided in the course syllabus. For other questions, contact the program secretary at (701) 355-8187 or the program coordinator at (701) 355-8046.
7. Do I have to quit work to complete this program?
This is a rigorous professional program. However, students are not advised regarding their work schedule. It is the students’ responsibility to assess feasibility of their workloads and personal and professional commitments, keeping in mind that the last two semesters of the program have at least 120+ clinical hours and various on-campus sessions. Some students do change their work schedules; others scale back to part-time status, while others have taken vacation time.
8. How do I purchase books?
Students are able to purchase books from the University of Mary Bookstore by either e-mailing or calling the bookstore and placing an order. The bookstore has a list of books corresponding to the classes and can assist students with their purchases. The bookstore number is (701) 355-8282 or toll-free (800) 408-6279, ext. 8282. Monty Seagren is the bookstore manager.
