Elementary education students conduct lessons at the
North Dakota Heritage Center!


Program Learning Experiences

·    Philosophy-based curriculum implemented by experienced full-time faculty with K-6 teaching experience

·    Participation in global experiences:

   o    Global Experience (Italy) 

   o    Global Experience (South Korea)

·    Participation in the Emerging Leaders Academy, a four-year program in educational leadership

            ·    Participation in the Institute for Educational Leadership, an
               educational leadership conference held at the University
               of Mary

·    Involvement in professional organizations (e.g., International Reading Association, State Math Conference, State Reading Conference, North Dakota Education Association) as participants and/or presenters

·    Full-time teaching experiences in classrooms with licensed teachers prior to student teaching that provide unique hands-on teaching opportunities

·    Mentoring and collaborative research opportunities with full-time faculty

·    Unique teaching experiences that help students develop the professional skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to become an effective teacher (student teacher portfolios):

o       Heritage Center: University of Mary students are  provided with the opportunity to work with area elementary pupils and teach from primary sources at the North Dakota Heritage Center.

o       Gateway to Science: Students from the University of Mary teach science lessons to area elementary pupils in conjunction with the after-school BLAST program utilizing the facility and its resources at Gateway to Science.

o       Young Author’s Celebration: Students facilitate and teach to small groups at the annual Young Author’s Celebration, which is sponsored by the South Central Reading Council.
