Management With a Human Resources Concentration

MGT 473 Human Resources
The overall intent of this course is to provide students with comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to human resource management and demonstrate how to successfully apply this knowledge. This course has been developed based on the human resource body of knowledge defined by the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI), an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The institute suggests that HR practitioners have exposure to and an understanding of the areas of management practices, general employment practices, staffing, human resource development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor Relations, and health, safety and security. Students will find the textbook and subjects covered in this course will help them prepare for professional exams in order to become PHR or SPHR certified in the Human Resource Certification Institute.

MGT 484 Human Resource Development
This course has been designed to help students develop an understanding of the professional field of human resource development (HRD) and how individuals and groups in organizations can change through learning. This course provides an introduction to HRD and HRD competencies, organizational learning, performance improvement and management, organizational development and change, and assessment of HRD need. 
3 credits.

MGT 485 Compensation and Benefits
This course has been designed to build a strong foundation for students in the understanding of the issues of compensation and benefits. The course will focus on strategic management and planning. It will explore current legislation, compensation systems, as well as pay administration. Students will study benefit packages both mandated and voluntary. Finally, students will be able to develop and utilize compensation and benefit evaluation. 
3 credits.

MGT486  Employee and Labor Relations
This course has been designed to provide an understanding of labor and management issues and equip students to evaluate contemporary legislation and labor issues. This course will explore employee and labor relations as they relate to the organizational culture as well as the strategic and communication plans of the organization. The principles and practices of collective bargaining and the grievance process are also investigated. 
3 credits.

MGT 487  Safety, Health and Security
This course has been designed to study the principles of the development and management of an effective security program. The philosophy and historical development of major concepts in the field will be studied. Specific attention will be paid to the development of programs complaints with OSHA and emerging legal issues in a variety of industries. This course will explore the area of risk management as it relates to safety, security, and health issues within the workplace. 
3 credits.
